The course aims at providing students with the essentials of processes and approaches to quality assurance. It describes the main activities and practices of QA and deals with individual activities from the viewpoint of motivation, processes and assessment methods. The course shows QA principles and their impact in development projects and long-term activities in IT business.

Course outline

Methods and standards
Introducing methods and standards for quality assurance. Classification of methods according to their focus.
Quality strategy
What is strategy and what it ensures. A definition of quality and quality criteria.
Risk identification and management
A definition and classification of risk. How to determine and manage risk. Risk assessment.
Product quality and the quality of a company
Product features. The level of quality vs. consistence. Qualitative characteristics of a company/organization. Standardization.
Quality management and control
Verification vs. validation. Process vs. product quality. Differences in approaches to assurance of process vs. product quality.
Roles and responsibilities
The definition of roles in the QA process. Responsibilities of individual roles. Examples.
Software testing
Software testing as a sub-set of quality assurance and verification.
Test preparation
Test requirements, preparing test cases, scripts and scenarios.
Performing and assessing tests
Test launch, iteration, implementation of changes. A problem report, a test log, a defect report, test assessment, the lifecycle of an error.
Statistical check and assessment
Sample vs. full (100%) check. Ways of quality control and sample selection.
Automated testing
Automatic tests – architecture, when they are suitable, general problems, general features of automatic test tools, automated unit tests. Description from the perspective of project management.
Performance testing
Revision of terms – performance and stress tests, test architecture, SLA – general features of performance test tools, description from the perspective of project management.
