The course aims at providing students with the knowledge of frontend web technology. Completing the course gives a student knowledge in web app development and design. Students also learn to use frameworks effectively both for frontend app development and their testing.

Course outline

Frontend technology classification
What is FE. Web apps, native mobile apps, VR/AR/MR, apps for smartwatch, smartTV etc.
Web functioning principles and key terminology
Network communication essentials. Historical development. Website vs. web app. Types of web apps.
HTML
Fundamental HTML signs, metadata for website machine processing.
JavaScript
Differences from BE. Transpilation tools (e.g. babel) for writing the latest JS for modern browsers.
Frontend libraries and the component approach
Modern libraries for frontend app development (Angular, ReactJS, UU5 etc.). Their characteristics and use. Dividing a presentation into logical blocks (components) and their configuration and reusability.
Communication with a server
Ways of loading data from a BE system, transforming JSON data to a user-readable form.
Response, styling and UX
Basic principles and characteristics of CSS, a responsive web, CSS Frameworks and CSS pre-processors. Response principles and the mobile-first approach. User interface design fundamentals for easy use and control. Ways of control element placement in an app.
User input
Forms and working with them. Validation, dynamic forms, storing data on BE.
Mocking
Advanced techniques of app development above the UU5 library. Preparing a functional design and FE app prototyping without the BE data availability.
Documentation
Ways of keeping the documentation of a FE app. How to describe the user interface of a (FE) app.
Testing
Testability of a FE app. Ways of testing components and an app as a whole.
The user identity
Communication with a server under the user identity. Identity administration in a FE app.
