The aim of the course is to provide comprehensive information in all contexts so that the student is able to orientate in key areas of the banking industry and to understand the principles of information systems that are used in banking. Students are also introduced to the standards of the non-profit organization BIAN (Banking Industry Architecture Network), which provides a technological ecosystem for the efficient operation of banking technologies and easier deployment of innovations in this industry.
Course outline
Main activities of banksThis section will provide an introduction to individual banking activities. They will acquaint students with the typology of banks according to activities. The key here is to clarify the differences between investment and commercial banking. The concept and meaning of the banking book will be explained. The construction of the banks' balance sheet will be discussed. The loan and the credit process and the creation of the bank's profit will be highlighted. Basic acquaintance with the concept and meaning of bank capital and bank liquidity.
Banking riskThe section introduces the importance of risk in banking. Key types of banking risks will be introduced and explained, especially credit risk, market risk, operational risk, regulatory risk, reputation risk, liquidity risk. The section will further acquaint with the processes of how banks handle risk and what problems they face in connection with risk. The section will therefore also affect the regulation of banks in the area of risk management.
Regulation of the banking sectorThe section will be fully devoted to the comprehensive issues of the banking sector. The section will introduce the reasons for the intensified regulation of the banking sector in recent years. The importance of the so-called capital adequacy and its individual pillars (ICAAP) will be reminded in more detail, as well as capital cushions and coverage of systematic risk, measures in case of lack of capital. The section will also focus on the development of regulation after the global financial crisis, including the so-called "macroprudential" regulation.
Management of bank assets and liabilities (ALM)The section contains the main principles of operation and management of bank assets and liabilities. The section contains the issue of minimizing interest rate, or exchange rate and liquidity risk. The importance of the yield curve in banking will be highlighted. Other related topics such as "asset allocation (ALCO)" and the bank's investment portfolio will also be mentioned.
Banking crisisThe section deals with crisis developments in banking and procedures in the event of turbulence in the financial sector. Measures in the event of a liquidity crisis as well as a systemic banking crisis will be addressed. Measures in case of lack of capital will be explained. The importance of the banking sector in the economy and the issue of so-called "too big too fail" will be discussed. The issue of regulation in the field of "recovery and resolution" will be outlined. The issue of deposit insurance and the resolution fund will be discussed.
Bank strategyThe section deals with the issue of coping with the banking sector with new trends, changes in technology and regulatory impacts. The impact of virtual money on the banking sector will be discussed. The link between commercial banking, the money market and monetary policy will be discussed. The importance of the banking sector for the country's economic policy will be emphasized.
